MEDICAL OFFICER

Dr. Ruan Fourie

Dr Ruan Fourie's path into remote and wilderness medicine began where few careers do — in uniform. He completed his medical training on a SANDF bursary, Ruan spent a decade serving in the South African National Defence Force, rotating through departments at a military hospital with a focus on General Surgery and Emergency Medicine. That foundation of discipline, adaptability, and service under pressure has shaped everything that followed.

Today, as Chief Medical Officer of RES Healthcare, Ruan brings that same ethos to some of Africa's most remote and resource-limited environments from exploration-phase mining operations to rural communities across South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia, Rwanda, and the Central African Republic. He leads the design of emergency response plans, evacuation strategies, and on-the-ground medical solutions where conventional healthcare infrastructure simply doesn't reach.

Ruan believes that great medicine is evidence-based and patient-centred, and that great leadership is about building people up. He lives by the principle that "a true leader inspires someone to believe in himself" — and brings that conviction to every team he builds and every community he serves.

Credentialled in BLS, ACLS, PALS, ATLS, and Wilderness Life Support for Medical Professionals, and with advanced 4x4 and defensive driving training to match, Ruan is as comfortable navigating terrain as he is managing a trauma. He is currently completing his Diploma in Primary Emergency Care and is never far from a practical first aid session with the teams on the ground.

His driving goal: to extend the reach and quality of healthcare across Africa, one remote setting at a time.
